Elephant garlic
Despite the name "Elephant Garlic," this plant is not true garlic. It is a close relative of the leek and produces very large, mild-flavored cloves. Native to the Mediterranean.
Harvest season: Early Summer
Flowering season: Early summer. Excellent for pollinators if allowed to flower but if growing to harvest the cloves, flower stalks should be removed.
Uses: Known for its mild, sweet flavour compared to regular garlic. Used in cooking for its large, soft cloves that can be roasted, grilled, or used in salads.
Soil type: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Best grown in full sun.
Average height and width: Grows up to 90 cm tall with a spread of 30 cm.
