Tall, fast growing species, grows well in wet soil and in exposed locations. One of Ireland's most widely distributed trees.
Uses: Windbreak, Firewood production, Hedging, Nitrogen fixer.
Wildlife value: Seeds eaten by siskin, goldfinch & redpoll. Leaves support a number of moth species. Roots stabilise river banks and reduce erosion, providing a habitat for many species.
